KE Software was chosen because of its obvious versatility and reliability. We were also able to experience it operating in other Australian registries and draw on performance results in those offices. The expanded search capability of the system and technological enhancements allows the Registry to increase productivity whilst improving customer service.

The population of the Australian state of Tasmania is 473,000 and its Registry records date back to 1803. The Register consists of approximately 1.5 million records, with an average yearly registration of 12,700 records.

Computerisation of Registry records began in 1989. In 1997 the Registry decided to use KE Software to provide a more robust and versatile system of registration and document production.

With the co-operation of the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages in the Australian state of Victoria, customisation was completed in 1998 and records were converted to the new system in January 1999.

Several data backcapture projects together with new registrations since July 1990 have resulted in some 660,000 records being available in electronic format.

Data backcapture remains a priority, as electronic records dramatically increase efficiencies within the Registry. The Registry’s clients also benefit greatly because new services such as data matching become possible.

Registration rates of new events remain static. Since November 2000, however, searches and resultant document production have increased by approximately 35%.

Resource management has improved in that same period. Some of the efficiency gains are directly attributable to KE Software and the level of computerisation that has been achieved.
